England home shirts in the 90’s
In the run up to the 1990 world cup, England brought out a new home shirt. The shirt below is a slightly modified version which was worn during the world cup but the design on both is identical. The shirt is traditionally white with faint silver Umbro patterns that run throughout it. The typeface is navy blue as is the polo neck collar whilst a small Umbro pattern is at the end of either sleeve. England wore this home shirt throughout Italia 90 and into the 1992 European Championships where for the first time numbers appeared on the front of the player’s shirts. The kit was eventually retired in November 1992.

Going into 1993, the famous white shirt was altered slightly. The crest now had a white margin inside it which actually made the badge look tidier. The collar was still navy yet slightly moderated with a strip of red also included in it. This was meant to be the kit that England took to the 1994 World Cup but unfortunately they failed to qualify. This proved to be the shortest lived England shirt and was retired late in 1994.

In 1995, a new shirt was released and it soon became one of the most popular England shirts of all time. Worn at the 1996 European Championships, hosted by England, this kit soon became a classic. The shirt was traditionally white with faint turquoise vertical strips running throughout. The badge was moved into the central and had the Umbro logo just above it. At Euro 96, arm badges were worn for the first time and player’s numbers permanently sown on the front. The collar remained navy but now contained a small strip of light blue as well. The shirt was eventually retired fairly soon after Euro 96 for a new one to be developed for the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign.

It was 1997 when England’s next new shirt made an appearance. After the similarities in previous kits, Umbro tried their hardest to make this one different. Keeping the usual plain white approach, the shirt also included bold red and navy sides with a red strip also accompanying the navy collar. The crest had also been changed to a light blue with hints of red giving this kit an entire new feel. The shirt was just about as popular as its predecessor and run through the 1998 world cup eventually retiring in early 1999.

The final home kit of the 20th century saw England go back to a very 1960’s retro feel. The red was completely eliminated from the shirt whilst the crest was once again changed back to navy and was redesigned to allow the word “England” to go above it. The collar had now become a round neck whilst the sponsor had once again shrunk in size. On the whole, the shirt felt a lot less cluttered than before yet didn’t really stand out in the crowd. Unfortunately, the kit was worn throughout England’s nightmare Euro 2000 experience and was retired shortly afterwards.
