England away and 3rd shirts in the 90’s
The first England away shirt to appear in the 1990’s. The kit was designed for the 1990 World Cup in Italy although it was actually never worn by the team during the tournament. The shirt is predominately red with faint white Umbro diamonds throughout. The actual layout of the strip is identical to that of the home shirt with the only differences being colour. The red shirt was also present during the 1992 European Championships before being retired in late 1992 along with the home kit.

England also launched a 3rd kit during 1990. The shirt was predominately blue with small white Umbro diamonds scattered throughout. The design layout was the same as the home and away strips of the same year although the collar included more navy touches than them. The kit was used during 1991 in a European Championship qualifier against Turkey. This was the first time a 3rd kit had been used since 1970. An alternative blue kit was used twice in 1992 and until this day England have never used another 3rd kit.

England did use an away top during 1993 but unveiled a new alternative during 1994. The shirt, described as “wine red”, made three appearances in total before being replaced for the European Championships hosted by England in 1996. Like its predecessor, the shirt is predominately red with the major difference being the faint white England crests in groups of three used as a background pattern throughout. The layout was once again identical to the home shirt of the same year.

The away shirt that was worn during the European Championships in England is probably the most famous England away shirt of all time. However, this is for all the wrong reasons. Released in the build up to the tournament, onlookers were shocked that the bright red had been replaced by a dull grey colour (even though the FA claimed it was indigo). The shirt is basically just vertical strips of different shades of grey and had the same impact as the Manchester United grey kit of the same year. The iconic image of this kit is when Gareth Southgate stepped up and missed the decisive penalty against Germany to send England crashing out of the tournament. The shirt was only worn once more after the Euro’s before it was thankfully retired.

England released their new away kit shortly after the grey kit disaster in 1997. The shirt was back to the traditional red with a woven pattern of the St George’s flag included in it. There were also several vertical strips in a darker shade of red that run throughout the shirt. The kit was worn throughout the 1998 World Cup and lasted for around two years before it was replaced in early 1999.

The final away shirt to be produced in the 1990’s was brought out in early 1999 along with the home strip. The shirt had a very 1960’s retro feel to it and was marketed through its similarities with the 1966 World Cup winning red shirt. As a result, the shirt was traditionally red and very plain although the inclusion of the navy collar added some character to it. The kit was worn throughout Euro 2000 and eventually replaced in 2001.
