Chelsea Home Shirts in the Nineties

The first new Chelsea shirt to be brought out in the 1990’s was a combination of dark blue patterns on a light blue background. It was Chelsea’s 3rd and final home kit that was sponsored by Commodore, the US electronics company. It was also the 3rd home kit in a row to be manufactured by Umbro. The kit contained a white typeface and collar whilst implementing bits of red around the club badge, collar and on the arm pattern. The shirt was worn for two seasons before being replaced by a completely brand new kit.

The second Chelsea home shirt of the 90’s was a complete change from the previous Commodore one. Instead, Umbro had designed a much more traditional shirt with a predominately blue background and a darker blue Umbro sign etched in behind. The shirt was sponsored it’s one and only time by computer company Amiga, who had previously been brought out by Commodore. Once again, the shirt contained a white typeface and several red patterns on the collar and on the arms. The shirt was only worn for a season before being replaced with a new sponsor.

After Chelsea scrapped the Amiga shirt, they found a new sponsor in 1995 in the shape of Coors Beer. The shirt was one of the more successful efforts of the 90’s as the scrolled white “Coors” typeface and the yellow integrated into the shirt really caught on. As usual, the shirt was predominately blue but had C.F.C in a dark blue colour etched into the background rather than Umbro. The collar was once again white although contained a button unlike previous home shirts. The shirt was worn for two seasons before once again being replaced by a new sponsor.

Following the success of the Coors sponsored shirt, Chelsea came up with yet another new design in 1997. This design however turned out to be probably the most popular Chelsea home shirt of the 1990’s. Newly sponsored by Autoglass, the club went back to a much lighter blue colour combined with a large white section on the arms. The yellow from the previous kit was also kept and integrated in small patches whilst the collar stayed white yet got rid of the button. The typeface stayed white and all in all the entire shirt had a much fresher feel to it than of recent years. Chelsea kept this shirt for the usual two seasons before creating a new Autoglass design.

The final home Chelsea shirt of the 90’s came in 1999 as Umbro designed a new kit sponsored once again by Autoglass. The new design became popular but failed to take off in the same manner as the one beforehand. Nevertheless, the new shirt had some nice features, especially the dark blue shiny Umbro strip running down the shoulders. The overall colour of the shirt went back to being much darker which evidently made the white typeface stand out. The big white patch on the sleeves were gone and replaced by a single line which separated the arms from the body of the shirt. Chelsea wore this home shirt until 2001 before another shirt was designed for new sponsors Fly Emirates.
