Nineties Sunderland Shirts

Football shirts had now changed dramatically. It was now standard for shirts to include a sponsors name across the front of the shirt and a manufacturers logo to be on the shirt. Shirts were now also made using lighter, more sportier materials.

The first Sunderland shirt of the 1990s was made by Hummel and was sponsored by Vaux. Away shirts got more daring and varied as Sunderland used this white away shirt with patterned sleeves.

Away colours changed from white, dark green and by 1995, the away colour was yellow with green stripes down the shoulders.

In 1994, the shirts were being made by Avec, and the sponsors name on the shirt changed to Vaux Samson. The first home shirt to be made by Avec was in 1994 and featured a strange geometric design on the shoulders and top of the shirt.

1996-97 season would be the last as Roker Park. Sunderland used a commemorative home shirt which featured the names of the stands watermarked into the stripes.

In 1997, Sunderland moved to their new home at the Stadium of Light. Shirts were now manufactured by Aasics and a new shirt sponsor of Lambtons had their logo in the centre of the shirt. the club badge was also, for the first time, in the centre of the chest. the away shirt fot that season was made in the same design and was gold in colour.

Sunderland wore this shirt until 1999, when new sponsor, Reg Vardy was on the shirt. Reg Vardy would become Sunderlands joint longest sponsor of six years. The final shirt for the 90s was made by Aasics and featured a black cat ob the sleeve, resembling the new nickname for the club of Blackcats and also used for good luck.
