Chelsea away shirts in the 90’s

The first away kit Chelsea shirt to be unveiled in the 1990’s was this red and white squared effort. Just like the home shirt, the away kit is sponsored by Commodore which takes its place in the centre of the shirt. The design looks very dated these days and, if anything, looks more like a rugby shirt. The shirt was worn for a full two seasons before a new one was designed.

Early 90's Chelsea

The second Chelsea away shirt was debuted in 1992 and run through until 1994. Even though Amiga took over sponsoring the home and 3rd kit, Commodore remained sponsors of the away shirt. The shirt was mainly white with thin vertical red stripes running throughout. The typeface was blue whilst the collar was changed to a red lace drawstring which, in my opinion, looks rather ridiculous on a football shirt. Chelsea wore the shirt for two seasons until a new one was designed in correlation with the new sponsor.

The next away shirt designed by Umbro for Chelsea was revealed in 1994 for new sponsors Coors Beers. Unfortunately, this shirt was not one of Umbro’s finest moments. The shirt veered away from its more recent red and white to instead create a predominately grey shirt with large orange patches. To say this shirt looks like a disaster is an understatement! Nevertheless, the poor Chelsea fans were forced to see their side wear this for two full seasons until Umbro decided to create a replacement.

Following the disaster of the grey and orange strip, Umbro designed a new shirt for the final year of Coors sponsorship. Fortunately, this turned out to be one of, if not the, best Chelsea away shirt of the 1990’s. The club seemingly had decided to focus more towards the yellow of the previous 3rd kits for inspirational for this shirt. Along with the yellow background is a very well blended light/dark blue combination towards the top of the shirt. The typeface is also in dark blue and the colours blend very well together whilst the Coors Beer font adds personality to the shirt.

Chelsea could only keep this shirt for a year due to Coors Beer being replaced as the sponsor in 1997. However, the design proved so popular that they kept the same design for the first year of Autoglass’s sponsorship up until 1998.

The final away Chelsea shirt of the 1990’s came in 1998 as Umbro went back to designing Chelsea a white away shirt. In fact this kit is basically a design replica of the home kit of the subsequent year. The main difference is that the colours have been reversed on this design. This shirt did prove quite popular with the Chelsea faithful as the simpleness of the kit really strikes through. The dark blue typeface goes well with the plain white as well as the two blue lines seperating the body from the arms. This kit was worn up until the year 2000 when Fly Emirates took over and had their own white kit designed.
