Juventus Retro Football Shirts

Italian club Juventus FC were founded in 1897 by a group of students from a grammar school in Turin. The club made their debut in the Italian Football League in 1900 wearing their original pink shirts. However, in 1903, the team decided to find a new kit and were inspired by the Notts County black and white striped shirts which they have worn ever since. Juventus’s first trophy was in 1905 with their first league title. However, Italian football was dominated by other clubs up until the First World War.

The team was steadily rebuilt after the war and the club secured their second league title arrived in 1926 with victory over Alba Roma. Juventus’ most successful period was between 1931 – 35 as the club won a record five consecutive League championships under Carlo Carcano, a feat that has never been repeated since. The team failed to live up to such expectations immediately after this but did win their first Coppia Italia in 1938 before domestic football took a break for the Second World War.

The team continued their success in the 1950’s with league titles in 1950, 52, 58 and 60. In 1961, Juventus become the first club to win ten Italian League titles. This year became quite a notable one for Juventus supporters as Omar Sivori became the first club player to win the European Footballer of the Year and Giampiero Boniperti retired as the club’s all time top scorer with 185 goals, a record that lasted for 45 years.

A slightly disappointing decade in the 60’s saw one other League championship in 1967 before the club completely dominated the 1970’s with league titles occuring in 1972, 73, 75, 77 and 78. With Giovanni Trapattoni becoming the club’s manager in 1976, the team’s success mounted including their first European triumph with a UEFA Cup final victory over Atletico Bilbao in 1977. Under Trapattoni, Juventus dominated the early part of the 1980’s with league titles in 1981, 82, 84 and 86 which took them past a landmark 20 Scudetto titles. The club reached the height of their European success in 1985 with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool. Nevertheless, the match was marked with the tragedy known as the Heysal disaster after the stadium collapsed killing 39 fans.

The rest of the 1980’s were relatively unsuccessful for the club. However, in 1994, Marcello Lippi took charge of the club and won their first League title since the mid 80’s in 1995 before going on to win two more in 97 and 98. The pinnacle of the 1990’s was reached in 1996 as the club won their second Champions League title in history with a penalty shoot out victory over Ajax. This was followed by two more final appearances in 97 and 98 but they lost out to Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. Lippi left the club briefly for a year but returned and led the team to two more Serie A titles in 2002 and 2003 along with another Champions League losing final appearance in 03. However, since then, the team has been in decline and were relegated to Serie B for the first time ever by default after a match fixing scandal emerged in 2005. The club achieved promotion at the first attempt and are currently trying to overtake Inter Milan as the dominant force in Italian football.
